Starting on the path of green cosmetics

14:40:00

First of all, congratulations on wanting to make a change! I hope you find my blog helps make it all a bit clearer for you all!

So, how do you start climbing the epic mountain that is green cosmetics?

First of all, go and get the nearest product to you with a big ingredients list on the back. These will become your new best friend. Its your only real source of info about what is actually in your product. The Ingredients must be listed in order of quantity. The main ingredient will always be first, then it goes down the list in descending order of concentrations.

Do you recognise anything?
    • You will probably find your main ingredient is "Aqua/water" in a lotion or gel.
    • If it bubbles, you might see "Sodium Lauyl Sulphate" or "Sodium Laureth Sulphate". If your product is already from a natural brand you might see "decyl glucoside". This is a naturally derived foaming agent.
    • Further down you will probably see lots of words ending -paraben. These are preservatives and are rather famous in the green movement.
    • Tocopherol is Vitamin E. You can buy it in capsule form from Health Stores and its very good for your skin either on it or taken as a supplement.
    • Plant extracts will probably be listed with a latin name and the common name in brackets e.g. "tritium vulgare (Wheat) germ oil".
    • "Linalool" and "Citronellol" come from any essential oils in the product.
Next, I'll show you how to start finding out more about what you have just read.

If you have any questions about this (I know it can get quite confusing when you first start out!) feel free to ask!
